Escargot at St Emilion

As we were leaving Les Combes yesterday, Adrian (friendly English property manager) told us we couldn't leave the area without visiting nearby St Emilion. It is a famous wine village and a popular tourist attraction - forty minutes later, we could see why.

On such a beautiful day, it seemed appropriate to fulfill one of our French quests - eating snails. And so we found ourselves in a lovely courtyard restaurant chomping on very tasty garlic/parsley snails mmmmmmm...

After such a lovely lunch, some champagne and lots of sunshine it seemed a tad ambitious to embark on our planned 3 hour drive. Instead, we decided to take a detour and stay overnight in Bordeaux. What a beautiful city this is! There are loads of landmark/streetscape pics Earl took during an afternoon but I think these ones below are a standout.

Apparently, all the sculptures in this fountain were confiscated during WWII to be melted down and the metal to be used to help with the war effort. Sometime during the late 1940s, all the pieces of the fountain were discovered intact and this magnificent artwork was painstakingly rebuilt to what you see here.

And finally, for the sweet tooths amongst you - check these out! The French really do make the most stylish (and tasty!) macaroons...
